Award winning farmer Dr. Glyvns Chinkhuntha said on Sunday in an interview poor agricultural policies are killing agriculture in Africa.
"Policy makers go to make policies without the involvement of a farmer .These are people who spend most of their time in the offices and know little about the toils a farmers is passing through," he said.
Dr Chinkhuntha said the decentralisation processes taking place in most african countries are having less impact because most policies are still formulated by offces at district level.
He lamented that it may be difficult for people to produce enough to feed themselves if most policies do not change.
"How do you expect a farmer whose views and problems have not been heard to follow policies that he never participated in its formulation.Yet they expect this farmer to produce enough food for his family and for export," he wondered.
Dr. Chinkhuntha ,who was awarded a Phd for the revolutionalising irrigation in Malawi has over 50 acres of land which he irigates using natural means .He does not have pumps.
He dose not use fertilizers in his field.
His place has become a tourist attraction attracting many people from various countries.
He plants herbs, all types of fruits and vegetables, fruit trees and many others.
