On January 21st the iLEAD campus played host to the director of socially relevant and thought provoking films such as GangaaJal, Aarakshaan, Satyagraha and Raajneeti – Mr. Prakash Jha. The aim of the visit was to participate in a panel discussion on the difficulties faced by a woman police officer in the predominantly patriarchal society.
Other than the famed Director, Producer and Screenplay Writer, Manav Kaul, who plays a prominent role in the upcoming Priyanka Chopra starrer film ‘Jai GangaaJal’ was also present. The event was also attended by social activist Shubhra Chatterjee, Deputy Commissioner of Calcutta Police Debashree Chatterjee and filmmaker Sudeshna Roy along with Mr. Pradip Chopra, the Chairman of iLEAD.
In Jhas upcoming film, Jai Gangajal the female protagonist plays the role of a tough cop who is out to remove crime and corruption from the society. However, due to her gender and the state apathy, she has to face several negativities that test her honest intents. The film also portrays the role and state of women police officers, as well as the plight of the police constables in India.
What Prakash Jha said was that being a woman, it is difficult to get along in this man’s world and the nightmare is more when one is a woman police officer. That was the context of the panel discussion held at iLEAD recently.
‘Jai Gangajaal’ is a about a woman police officer who is on a mission to straighten those who are crooked. As common men and women it is easy to blame the system for everything that is wrong. However, we cannot forget that we are an integral part of the system and if the system is not right then just talking about it is not enough. Rather we have to think how to put things right and this was the point driven home by Mr. Jha.
For the students of ilead it was an engaging and a learning experience and they learnt from the acclaimed director.
