old forces Chakors to descend into town

CHITRAL:  A rare but interesting phenomenon concerning wildlife was witnessed in Chitral town Saturday when many of the ‘Chakors’ (red-legged partridge) descended to the lower pastures and villages and some strayed into the bazaar of the town from uphill forests due to heavy snow there. The town is flanked by Chitral Gol National Park and has reasonable stock of the species which is also the national bird of Pakistan. The medium-sized bird known for its elegance and beauty has been declared as one of the endangered species and has a considerable population in the national park at its higher altitude whose hunting is strictly prohibited. Due to the heavy snowfall of the other days in the district, the immense cold and lack of food has forced the birds to migrate to lower altitudes. The flocks of birds were seen flying downward at sun rise. People were seen chasing the beleaguered bird throughout the  day. Affected by the severe cold, the birds were not able to fly with ease and were seen being captured by the boys alive. A person told this scribe that he saw a young man capturing as many as twelve birds simultaneously
