Per Reuters, famed Myanmar activist and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has pleaded not guilty in her latest trial. Suu Kyi faces up to five years in jail if convicted of letting an intruder into her home early May despite being on house arrest.
Suu Kyi’s lawyers said that the pro-democracy activist had let the man, John Yettaw, in her home because he had complained of leg cramps after swimming across a lake, according to Reuters. She has been on house arrest for 13 of the past 19 years in the East Asia nation.
The trial has been the subject of many critics’ concern, with claims that the Burmese military regime is simply looking for ways to imprison Suu Kyi, the leader of National League for Democracy party, per the Daily Mail.
Twitterers around the world are calling for Myanmar to free Suu Kyi.
