About 50 Tibetans on 28 March demonstrated in Kathmandu with the placard of “FREE TIBET”. They demonstrated in front of the UN Building in Lalitpur around 10 o’clock in the morning. About 17 of the young Tibetans jumped down into the UN complex and gave placards and pamphlets to some UN staff members. While they were doing like that, the police arrested a few Tibetans in front of the UN gate.
The Tibetans who are in favor of independence from China have been demonstrating against the Chinese rule in Tibet. Especially, the Tibetan community in Kathmandu have shown their concern over the ongoing suppression in Tibet.
However, thousands of Tibetans well settled in Nepal have not taken out to the streets as most of them have become naturalized Nepali citizens. They run varieties of businesses, especially the carpet industries. Moreover, they respect Nepal’s foreign policy of One China.
Nepal’s current government headed by the Nepali Congress is in a difficult position as to adopting a clear policy towards pro-independence Tibetan fighters since the USA and India have not clearly sided with One China policy though they have emphasized on dialogic approaches between Beijing and Dalai Lama.
Although some leftist leaders of Nepal have individually spoken in public gatherings that they are in favor of unified China, the government has tried to be balanced amidst the pressures of different human rights institutions stimulating the pro-independence fight.
The majority of the Nepalis are concerned over the possibility of their own territorial disintegration since many pro-India armed groups in the Terai region have threatened to divide Nepal.
