Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) has ordered an inquiry into the alleged beating of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Virendra Kumar Khatik.
Khathik is in hospital and in critical care after being thrashed by Railway Protection Force personnel in full public view.
The incident took place just two hours away from the state capital Bhopal in Beena town.
Members of the railway police surrounded the MP and thrashed him with their canes after an argument.
The 54-year-old MP had gone to the area as illegal shops on railway land were being demolished.
Earlier, the local people had thrown stones at the police in anger. The MP was bleeding and almost unconscious when he was taken to a hospital in Bhopal. He is reportedly still in the ICU but out of danger.
A case has been registered against the RPF personnel and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has condemned the incident.
