Messages have been posted on Chinese websites by thousands of people calling for the government agency involved in the beating death of the man filming to be abolished. The attack had occurred in the Hubei province where there have been large demonstrations taking place.
Twenty-four people have been questioned by local police about the killing. Four of those men have remained in custody.
This incident began when local police attempted to stop a rubbish truck from dumping refuse at a site that was too close to the village according to the Chinese state media. Then the Chinese municipal inspectors known as the Chengguan had intervened.
The victim was Wei Wenhua, who was the manager of a construction company in Tianmen City. He was driving by when the incident happened. He stopped to film the confrontation with his mobile phone.
He refused to give into the demands of the Chengguan that he delete the footage. As a result, Mr. Wei was beaten to death right on the spot according to witnesses.
Bie Bixiong, the Communist Party chief of Tianmen City said those responsible should be punished according to the law. The death did not only trigger protests in Mr. Wei’s hometown but caused a call to rethink the Chengguan’s establishment.
According to BBC, this is not the only time that the Chengguan has beaten someone to death. There has been repeated criticism on the group’s use of extensive force since the ten years it was established.
Many hope that this incident will bring down the Chengguan.
