The present lull over Hogenakkal issue has for the time being stopped unnecessary vandalism from both sides, inconvenience caused to the public and the travelers and peace-loving people living both in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, have also heaved a sigh of big relief.
The Octogenarian Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has used all his political experience and wisdom, taking stock of the situation and the realities into account, has taken such a wise decision of putting the Hogenakkal issue only on hold till the assembly elections in Karnataka is over and a new government assumed office in the state.
One should not forget that the Hogenakkal issue has been flared up only by politicians in Karnataka, that too on the eve of assembly elections there, to gain some political advantage in the elections. No doubt that Tamil Nadu is legitimately and rightfully entitled to proceed and get on with Hogenakkal issue and it need not get any body’s permission or heed any body’s advice in this regard.
However, in the wake of the assembly elections in Karnataka and that too when they are driven by passion than by reality, incited by unscrupulous politicians, any hard stand taken by Tamil Nadu Government will actually result in more bloodshed than solving the problem in an amicable way. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has not done anything novel. He has simply copied Gandhiji, who withdrew the Non-Co-operation movement when the movement turned violent.
Above all, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was also impelled by the factor and common political strategy that let the tempers cool down so that the problem may be solved in an amicable way if possible. Moreover, Mr.Karunanithi’s decision was also in a way influenced by coalition politics, in which, DMK supports Congress I at the centre and Congress I supports DMK government in the state. Again, the decision was also taken perhaps on the advice of the Prime Minister, who advised both Tamil Nadu and the Karnataka Government to resolve the Hogenakkal issue by bilateral talks.
Though regional parties AIADMK,MDMK and AISMK are blaming the Tamil Nadu Government for withdrawing the agitation in the Hogenakkal issue and even assuming if they are right, the agitation has not been totally withdrawn but only put on hold till the elections are over in Karnataka.
Moreover, even if Tamil Nadu government stepped up its agitation over the Hogenakkal issue, the problem will not get solved till a new government assumes power in Karnataka. Above all when Tamil Nadu Government sought the intervention of the Central Government, it is not prepared to intervene, in the wake of the assembly elections there.
Therefore, taking all the above aspects into consideration, the decision taken by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister,by putting the Hogenakkal issue on hold till a new government assumes power in Karnataka, is wise and strategic !
