About 95 per cent of the work on the 199 kilometre Qazigund-Baramulla section of the railway project in Kashmir has been completed. State Governor N N Vohra was apprised by the Chief Administrative Officer Northern Railways R K Gupta of the progress on the project yesterday. The red colour eight-coach Diesel Electric Multiple Unit train chugged on the Badgam-Nowgam sector of the Qazigund- Baramulla section with Vohra on board.
The Governor also conducted an aerial survey of the 10.96 kilometer long Pir Panchal tunnel from Banihal to Lower Munda, considered to be the longest tunnel on the railway network. Vohra was also apprised that the 199 kilometer Qazigund- Baramulla section will have 800 bridges, which will cost Rs 2400 crores. Till now about Rs 2200 crores have been spent, marking about 95 per cent of the work. The funding of the project is made by the Centre directly.
Vohra also reviewed the progress on all the three sections of the Jammu and Kashmir Railway Project in a high power meeting, an official spokesman said today. The project once completed will generate employment for 3900 persons in the Valley, he said. Vohra directed the Commissioner (Works) Shalendra Kumar to ensure the construction of approach roads to all the 15 railway stations in the Valley by October 31.
He also called for expediting the land acquisition cases especially in Reasi and Ramban districts. The Governor also asked the Commissioner Forest Department to ensure clearance of all pending land cases by October 31
