The Guhilas of Mewar
The Guhilas or Guhilots of Mewar represent the heroic tradition of the Rajputs fully. Guhadatta was the founder of the dynasty. The ninth ruler of this dynasty Khommana successfully resisted the Arab invaders during the 8th century. He was respectfully called as `Bappa Rawal’. In 954 AD., Allata of this dynasty killed Devapala of Kanauj and conquered the great city. He had married a Hun (Huna) lady called Hariyadevi. In the days of Rana Ratan Singh, Alla –ud- din Khilji attacked Mewad and arrested the king. But the Rajputs got him released Rajputs got him released.
Rana Kumbha (1431 to 1469 AD.) fought against the Sultans of Malwa and Gujarath to protect his realm.
He built the famous pillar of victory at Chitore. Rana Sangha was another famous ruler who engaged himself continuously in fight against the Sultans of Delhi, Malwa and Gujarath. He is said to have fought 100 battles and had 80 scars of wounds on his body.
Rana Sangha lost to Mughal ruler Babur in 1527 at Kanwa. His successors, Rana Udaya Singh and Rana Pratap continued their resistance heroically against the Mughals.
Many Rajputs dynasties saw their end during the Delhi Sultanate (1206 to 1526 AD). May more surrendered to the Sultans and remained as their subordinates. Some like those from Bharatpur, Jaipur, and Jodhpur continued during the Mughal period, most of them accepting the Mughal over lordship. But Rana Pratap of Mewar did not yield to Akbar till the end and he resisted the Mughal power. The Rajputs made all efforts to resist the Turkish invaders coming from Afghanistan. But they did not offer a united front and engaged themselves in mutual squabbles. They were known for their arrogance and a sense of false prestige.
Though they did resist the Turkish invaders and the Delhi Sultans, in the long run, among those that were not annihilated almost all accepted Mughal over lordship.
