A Taste of Country News released a report today that Country Artist Ray Price, 87-year-old, has entered hospice care at his home of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Price is a Country Music Hall of Famer; noted for such great hits as, ‘Release Me,’ ‘City Lights’ ‘For the Good Times, etc.
KLTV in Tyler, Texas reported that Price is leaving the East Texas Medical Center today. His wife, Janie, of 45 years said he is making his own decisions and is alert, and continuing to say,
“With God’s blessing he has not had extreme pain. But it’s with great sadness that I announce to you today that my beloved husband has entered the final stages of his cancer he’s been battling for 25 months. Anyone who has known Ray is aware that he has strong convictions and great faith in God. It’s his decision to leave the hospital and return to his home to spend his final days at his beloved ranch surrounded by the comforts of his own place, family and friends.”
Price’s song ‘For the Good Times’ won the 1970 ACM and Grammy Award. His music got his fans attention because he had such a rich powerful voice. It is my opinion he is and will be one of the top number one singers from the early 1970’s and until. I remember sitting for hours listening to his music because I had a sense for a need of calmness in my soul. His music had that type of a feel to on me. He was a classy, one of a kind man, who definitely knew how to capture the attention of his fans while singing lyrics about everyday life. I must say, “I loved and will miss seeing his great stature on the stage…he was a hard act to follow on any stage.”
Price sends a final message to his fans by saying, “I love my fans and I have devoted my life reaching out to them; and I appreciate the support of the television stations throughout the years and I hope I haven’t let them down. I am at peace. I love Jesus; and I’m going to be fine. Don’t worry about me…I’ll see you again one day.”
This news doesn’t come as a surprise even though Price had declared his cancer was in remission in February because he has spent much of the year in and out of the hospital. The news that the cancer had returned surfaced earlier on this month.
Prices` wife Janie’s statement revealed that he had learned of the cancer a full year prior to sharing the news with his beloved fans. In November 2012, Price indicated that he had been undergoing chemotherapy for the past six months.
Price told everyone, “I’m not looking for sympathy…that’s the way life is.”
My prayers go out to Ray Price, his wife, and his immediate family.
