Reflections on Michael Schumacher’s retirement

Micheal Schumacher is a person par-excellence. A great legend in the world of motorsport, a person you could hardly not admire. A legend in the true sense of meaning. The finess with which he would manuoevre his car over the kerbs with the flick on his hands was a master-piece I guess many new rookies would want to learn from him.
I, personally, was never a fan of Micheal Schumacher. My favourite driver when I used to watch formula1 devotedly was Mika Hakkinen, then driving for McLaren Mercedes. I would always feel flustered and defeated when most of the times he would win races ahead of Hakkinen. I was never a fan of his, but in that resigned frustration was hidden my secret admiration for the great man. What a career he had!
With his retirement, the world of motorsport and especially formuala1 has had a great loss. Starting his early days in Benetton he was just another rookie. The likes of Ayarton Senna were reigning supreme in those days. And fate had it, with Senna getting killed in one of the races, the road for Michael Schumacher to reach glory had been opened. And he has never looked back. With brilliant back-to-back performances, the lad impressed one and all and in no time found himself behind the wheels of the demon-machine, the Ferrari. A man of stature, he would gel very well with his co-driver and mechanics, spreading an air of friendliness all around him. His jovial nature was like by everybody. Playing charity football matches and attending many such social gatherings for the needy also speaks about the humane side in him to do something for the society and the fans, who have supported him in numbers.
Such a dynamic personality’s retirement truly is a big blow to everybody, more so to team Ferrari and his vast fan club. I would also say to the extent that fellow competitors who were his rivals in races would agree with me that retirement of such a dexterous driver is truly a loss for the game. Having said that I cannot imagine what Michael would have gone through while making this decision. As they normally say, old have to make way for new, I don’t think it is quite possible for any other driver to reach such heights that Michael Schumacher has reached both in the sport as well as in human. It’s truly a loss for formula1. I hope and belive that he stays connected with the sport in some way or the other his whole life.
