The Bangladesh Power Development Board has secured approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for its proposed 1,320MW coal-run power plant at Rampal in Bagerhat amid severe concerns of the environmentalists and ministries.
The Department of Environment (DoE) gave the EIA green signal after eight revisions and imposing a number of conditions to protect the World Heritage Site, declared by the Unesco, and river Pashur which is a sweet-water dolphin sanctuary.
The final environmental clearance for the project would be given after implementation of the project “only if the project is installed with proper mitigation measures suggested to check pollution,” Md Shahjahan, additional director general of the DoE, told the Dhaka Tribune.
