Selected KASC Research & Extension Projects
To Compete In Region
By Marciano A. Paroy Jr.
The Highland Agricultural Research and Development Consortium (HARRDEC) recently conducted last May 30-31 an In-House Review of Research and Extension projects conducted by researchers and extension experts of KASC, including proposals, and those that are currently being conducted.
The team of evaluators, led by Dr. Carlito Laurean of the Benguet State University, reviewed and evaluated 32 researches and 20 extension projects. These undertakings all passed through the discerning eyes of the team, and after a two-day grueling scrutiny of all the presentations done by the researchers and extensionists, a number of titles were selected to compete in the regional symposium this August at BSU.
“Most of the research and extension projects are indeed contributory to rural development,” Dr. Maria Klondy Dagupen, member of the evaluating team, said. “All in all, I should say that the past year has been productive for KASC, in terms of research and extension.”
As observed in the actual review, KASC researchers and extensionists conducted diverse projects – from highly technical researches to entrepreneurial undertakings, to socially inclined projects.
By the end of the review, the team came up with its verdict, and selected the titles which they perceive to have a chance at the regional symposium. Engr. Manuel Bilagot’s Global Information System (GIS) Program clearly impressed the evaluators as member Dr. Janet Pablo expressed that “As a product of BSU, you have made us very proud with this research program of yours.”
Similarly, Engr. Bilagot’s Affiliated Non-conventional Energy (ANEC) Program drew the nod of approval from the evaluators, as they gave it high marks for its inclusion in the August symposium.
The Nutritive Value of Basidiomycetes (Kurat, Kudit and Laplapayag) in the Province of Kalinga by Dr. Helen Bais, and The Acceptability of Taro Flour in the Preparation of Cake and Polvoron by Mrs. Zorayda Gavino and Dr. Virginia Petang were selected to participate in the poster category at the symposium.
As for extension, Livelihood Skills and Capability-Building for Disadvantaged Youth and Women in the Municipality of Tinglayan by Dr. Maximo Garming and Dr. Raymond Balbin was likewise given the go-signal to compete in the region.
The programs by Engr. Bilagot, and the extension project by Dr. Garming and Dr. Balbin shall compete in the Paper Category – which means that the said projects shall be presented in all their entirety, from the title down to the findings. This ensures that the regional evaluators shall have a more in-depth examination into the said endeavors – thus providing the project leaders a better chance to win.
College President Eduardo Bagtang was lauded by the team of evaluators, during the exit meeting, for his continuing dedication to the areas of research and extension.
Dr. Jovita Saguibo, Director for Research, expressed her hopes that HARRDEC may continue guiding KASC researchers into the right direction, especially for those who are neophytes in the field.
Dr. Ma. Luz Fang-asan, Engr. Victor Lopez, and Forester Diosdado Estigoy completed the 6-man team of evaluators.
