Rev. Conroy prays for the gifts of wisdom and discerment be given members of Congress

Beautiful stained glass in the Congressional Prayer Room in Washington D.C.

The Chaplain, the Honorable Reverend Patrick J. Conroy, for the US House of Representatives offered the following prayer on February 19, 2015:

“Gracious God, we give You thanks for giving us another day.

In this moment of prayer, please grant to the Members of this people’s House, as they meet with their respective constituents, the gifts of wisdom and discernment, that in their words and actions they will do justice, love with mercy, and walk humbly with You.

We ask as well Your blessing upon those who are especially impacted by the severe winter weather in this city and throughout so much of our country. May those who work to address the needs of the weak and vulnerable at times like this know they do Your work.

May all that is done this day be for Your greater honor and glory. Amen.”

Note: In addition to opening proceedings with prayer, the Chaplain provides pastoral counseling to the House community, coordinates the scheduling of guest chaplains, and arranges memorial services for the House and its staff. In the past, Chaplains have performed marriage and funeral ceremonies for House members.

Note: Rev. Conroy quoted from Micah 6:8 which reads as follows:

“He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to 1) do justly, and 2) to love mercy, and 3) to walk humbly with your God?”

“Act justly” (Micah 2:1-2, 3:1-3; 6:11).

“Love mercy” (Micah 2:8-9;3:10-11, 6:12).

“Walk humbly”( Micah 2:3)
