Way of the Samurai was one of the first games on the PS2 to offer a fully, or as much as could be, interactive environment with a large amount of character freedom. You could talk to any character, attack whom ever and the game ending would determine which ending you got.
The game takes place during Japan’s Meiji Period, during the Satsuma Rebellion, the final days of the samurai. You play a a ronin traveling through a pass that is about to erupt into a war zone between two clan factions and the government. you can choose to join one of these factions or just let them fight it out and try to stay out of the way.
There are a wide range of swords and other weapons in this game and a local blacksmith will allow you to power up the attack and defense of these weapons. You also will master different moves that can be strung into powerful combos or unblock able strikes.
While it is considerably out dated compared to other games, Way of the Samurai remains at least a fun weekend rental. The price of the game itself is low so if you find it it is worth the low purchase price.
