Early on in the Democratic race, Senator Hillary Clinton of New York attacked Senator Barack Obama of Illinois for his connection to Tony Rezko, the fast food magnate and real estate developer. Rezko had served as a good source of ammunition for Clinton to use against Obama in the beginning. But, it only worked for a short amount of time.
For the last several weeks, Rezko was on trial. So far, Obama has not been implicated in any of the crimes that Rezko was charged on. As soon as Obama clinched the Democratic nomination, Rezko was found guilty on sixteen out of twenty-four counts of fraud in a corruption case. Rezko has contributed to Obama in the past. But, Obama returned the funds to Rezko.
Now, Rezko is serving time behind bars. This time, Rezko is accusing federal prosecutors of trying to use pressure to implicate Obama in the corruption case. Rezko has already sent a letter to the U.S. District judge with his accusation against the federal prosecutors.
“They are pressuring me to tell them the ‘wrong’ things I supposedly know about Gov. Bagojevich and Sen. Obama,” Rezko had written. He also adds: “I have never been party to any wrongdoing that involved the governor of the senator. I will never fabricate lies about anyone else for selfish purposes. I will take what comes my way, but I will never hurt innocent people.”
Still, Obama has not been accused of or implicated in any wrongdoing or other illegal activities in the Rezko case. But, this case does serve as valuable ammunition for the Republican National Committee (RNC). Even before Obama clinched the Democratic nomination, the RNC focused attacks on him instead of Clinton.
According to the Chicago media, Rezko is also been pressured to cooperate with current investigations of the campaign and administration of current Illinois Governor Rod Bagojevich.
This letter may end up as ammunition against Obama later on in the US Presidential Race.
