Srinagar, June 29(Scoop News) –Paying rich tributes to great Statistician, late Prof. P.C Mahalnobis on the celebrations of 6th Statistic Day like other parts of the country at function held at Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Bemina, Srinagar here on Friday, the Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor of Islamic University of Science and Technology Prof A.R. Trag, highlighted the contributions of late Statistician in fields of Economics Planning and Statistics. The current year’s theme of today’s celebration is industrial Statistics.
The Vice Chancellor said the celebration of Statistics Day is not only to honour the great personality but also to give him due reorganization to the fact that Statistics have an effect on all major decisions we take in our public life either small or big. He said that the hallmark of a State’s reputation will be the credibility and the transparency of its Statistical system and the Statistical data emulating from the system.
Director of Economics and Statistics, B. R. Lachotra urged his fellow statisticians to work with more dedication and concerted efforts for furnishing quality data, address data gaps besides addressing other deficiencies for realistic planning and policy formulation. He said reliable and up-to-date statistical data is vital for decision making both at macro and micro levels. He said Industrial sector is one of the important sectors of economy in terms of generating income, employment and foreign exchange. He said due to emergency of competitive environment both at national and global levels coupled with recent shift of policies from closed economy towards liberalisation, globalization and free flow of market force through the process of economic reforms, have further enhanced the relevance of ensuring timely, adequate and reliable statistics on vide spectrum and industrial activities.
Head of the Departments of Statistics, Economics and Mathematics, Kashmir University, Special Secretary, Planning and Development Department, M.H. Malik, Consultant (Planning) G. A Qureshi, HOD Economics A.S. Bhat, and HOD Statistics, Aquil Ahmad also spoke on the occasion.
Among others, senior officers of the department and representatives from various NGOs attended the function.
