The arrest warrant issued against Mr.Richard Gere by a Rajathan lower court in connection with the kissing incident involving him and Bollywood Actor Ms.Shilpa Shetty was stayed by the Supreme Court on Friday. The Court also stayed the Order of another lower court in Rajasthan that if Mr.Gere visited India, he should not leave the Country.
A Bench consisting of Chief Justice Mr.K.G.Balakrishnan and Justice Mr.R.V. Ravindran which heard the appeal filed by Mr.Gere reprimanded the complainant’s counsel by posing him questions ‘will you file applications whenever somebody embraced somebody? Is he (Magistrate) the Immigration Officer to pass an Order? The other judge, Justice Mr.Ravindran felt that such ‘publicity hunting’ brings only bad name to the country. In their view, the complaint is not maintainable and the Magistrate had no business to issue the arrest warrant.
Sometime back, the Apex Court had stayed all the proceedings in these cases on an appeal filed by Ms.Shilpa Shetty seeking the transfer of the proceeding to Mumbai.
