The son of a rickshaw puller has got a job with an annual salary of Rs 2.75 lakh in the prestigious Infosys Technologies, thanks to the training from the state-run Jawahar Knowledge Centre. Mr C. Prasad, 22, an engineering student of Nellore, was felicitated at the IT Summit-2008 on Thursday by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, as the best JKC student of the year.
The JKCs are run by the Institute of Electronic Governance of the state government. “I am overwhelmed as I got the award from the Chief Minister in the presence of my parents and dignitaries from software majors such as Infosys, Wipro and Satyam,” said a happy Mr Prasad, whose father, Mr Penchalaiah, has been a rickshaw puller in Nellore town for years.
“My mother Ramanamma works as a maid servant in several houses,” said Mr Prasad. “Together, they make less than Rs 10,000 a month.” However, the parents scraped together what they had to send their son to the Y.K. Acharya English Medium School in Nellore. “They were able to teach me only till class IV because they did not have enough money,” he said. But the school correspondent, Mr N.Seshu Brahmam, helped the student by waiving his fee till he passed out of the school. “I got 77 per cent marks in my class-ten exams,” he said. Mr Prasad then joined Sri Bharathi Junior College and passed his Intermediate (MPC) with 90 per cent marks. He got a fee discount here too. “Later I attempted Eamcet in 2002 and secured 23,000th rank,” he said. “I got a seat in the Narayana Engineering College in Nellore in EEE stream.”
As he belonged to the scheduled caste, Mr Prasad was entitled to a fee waiver for his engineering course. “Now I am pursuing the final year course which will be completed this summer,” he said. Meanwhile, he joined JKC centre which was set up in his college. He was trained in soft skills for two months and when Infosys conducted a recruitment drive in the college, he was selected for a job. He will join Infosys this July. “I have only seen the Chief Minister on TV screens and never thought that one day I would get an award from him,” said Mr Prasad.
