Riding Her Way To Claim Country’s First Two Paralympic Medals

Laurentia Tan, who is deaf and has cerebral palsy, has bagged two bronze medals for Singapore at the 2008 Paralympic Games. The sport- horse riding.

The medals are Singapore’s first from the games ever. The Paralympics is the equivalent of the Olympics but participants have physical disabilities.

The equestrian, who is based in Surrey, England, competed in the Individual Championship Test Grade 1A and Individual Freestyle Test Grade 1A  events. 

Her horse is named Nothing To Lose, a reflection of her attitude as she said she had no expectations for herself with regard to winning.

In both games, she lost to Brits Sophie Christiansen and Anne Dunham, who both won one gold and one silver each. 

Tan told a local newsparer over the phone: " I hope that this will raise the level of equestrian sport for the disabled in Singapore, and that this will open up even more opportunities for riding."

She now heads to Beijing to join the rest of the Singapore team. They will attend the closing ceremony on Wednesday.
