Mukesh Ambani led, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) – India’s top most energy producer, has announced a rich gas and condensate discovery in deepwater Cauvery-Palar basin. The discovery was made as a result of drilling of the first ever well in the region in the block CY-PR-DWN-2001/3(CYPR-D6).

The discovery well, namely CYPR-D6-SA1, is located at a depth of 1194 mts under the sea bed and was drilled to a target depth of 3815 mts, eventually terminated in crystalline basement. The well came across multiple hydrocarbon bearing clastic reservoirs in the late cretaceous section and several tests including the Modular Dynamic Testing (MDT) and the Drill Stem Testing (DST) have confirmed the presence of a rich gas and condensate reserve in the basin. During DST phase, the well produced 37 million standard cubic feet of gas and 1100 barrels of condensate per day through a 56/64 choke size from the main zone that has a gross thickness of about 70m (230 ft). Another zone, located at a ankle deep level, was recognized through MDT sampling by collecting gas and condensate samples from the area. This discovery has been titled as ‘Dhirubhai-53’ and has been informed about to Government of India and Directorate General of Hydrocarbons.

This block, which spreads across an area of about 8600 sq km, was awarded to RIL under the bidding round of NELP-III. It falls under the 23 exploration blocks as identified under the RIL-BP deal where BP gets a 30% participation interest stake. As per a statement released by the company, RIL plans to carry out further appraisal activity to assess the extent of these reservoirs.

This is one the most significant discoveries made by RIL’s energy quarters this year and is likely to compensate for the lowering results it has been facing from the KG D6 basin. Following its collaboration with BP it has been anticipated that the output meters will soar further higher under Reliance’s operational expertise coined with BP’s exploration expertise.
