RIM Launches BlackBerry Tablet OS Native SDK Beta For Game Developers

Research In Motion , the maker of Blackberry phones and tablets has introduced Native SDK beta for BlackBerry Tablet OS. The sdk touts features that allow blackberry app developers to code BlackBerry PlayBook tablet games in the Standard Template Library, C/C++and Open GL ES 1.1/2.0, reports FierceDeveloper.com.

The BlackBerry Tablet OS Native SDK is comprised of a series of POSIX linked libraries that support the accelerometer, the orientation of the device and related functions. These functions are designed to make it easier for developers to port existing games to the PlayBook format. The new SDK also includes the Eclipse-based QNX Momentics Tool Suite. This includes application and memory informed devices optimized for programs including hardware-accelerated OpenGL apps.

RIM also plans to release updates during the beta phase. The company also promises brand new APIs along with other features and enhancements.

The BlackBerry Tablet OS and the PlayBook have the same foundation – the QNX Neutrino microkernel architecture. Toward the end of 2010, the mobile device firm announced that it would gradually substitute the BlackBerry smartphone OS with BlackBerry Tablet OS. At any rate, this will take some time – at least five years and that too in a highly evolving industry.

The new Beta software comes amid stiff competition from iOS and Android platforms. Both Apple and Google’s Android are contenders for the top spot in app development, while Windows Phone 7 trails behind. Recently, HP said that it would be putting an end to its WebOS platform due to mediocre sales.
