River To Wait Another Week

Around midday today Judge Luis Rodríguez, in an effort to avoid further confrontation, decided to suspend the match between River Plate and Newell’s Old Boys to take place at El Monumental.

This is on the heels of the bloody week outside the pitch for Los Millonarios. One of the main members of the team’s barrabrava Los Borrachos del Tablón (The Balcony Drunks) was shot and killed earlier this week as a result of the power struggle going on within that group.

Add to that the fierce hatred that fans from both River and Newell’s have towards each other, esespecially after their "rumble" on the Pan American highway a few years back which left six fans dead.

Currently there is no make-up date for this match, but that should be announce within the week. This leaves River’s debut in the tournament to be against defending champ San Lorenzo at the Nuevo Gasómetro.

Juan Arango: After writing for Goal.com for three years, I decided to go on my own. One of the most rewarding endeavors is to write here for GroundReport.com.

Besides sports both at the local level and internationally, I will be covering the Super Tuesday proceedings in Connecticut, which suddenly turned into a swing state here in New England. So check me out here as well as in my blog.
