Roj TV -a Kurdish TV station based in Denmark- has been found guilty of promoting terrorism by a Copenhagen Court last week. The TV station, which is allegedly linked to the Kurdistan armed-rebellion (PKK), has been suspended by its satellite provider.
A Danish court last week levied a 5.2 million Danish crown ($894,800) fine against Roj TV and the two companies behind it for facilitating and inciting participation in a terrorist organisation.
Between February 2008 and September 2010, Roj TV "one-sidedly and uncritically disseminated (PKK) messages, including incitement to revolt and to join the organization", prosecutors said. Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is designated a terrorist organization by the European Union, Turkey, and the United States.
The Danish Minister of Justice and the Danish Minister of Culture issued a press release stating that the Danish government "will now make sure that the Danish legislation provides all sufficient measures to react against radio and TV stations promoting terrorism."
Under these circumstances, Roj TV has been suspended by its satellite provider in order to avoid incurring criminal liability as an accomplice to terrorist activities. However, the Kurdish TV station should soon find an agreement with another satellite operator, such as Intelsat or SES S.A, which transmits over 5,900 channels to 245 million households across the world.
Prior to this ruling, Roj TV’s programs were shown in 68 countries.
