With the results in of Michigan’s Republican primary, Mitt Romney is the third Republican victor in the first four states of the 2008 primary session. This will further ignite the volatile nomination battle that lacks a clear favorite to win the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
The former governor of Massachusetts had beaten Senator John McCain of Arizona who gambled on the independents and Democrats banding with Republicans to help him repeat his 2000 triumph in Michigan. Mike Huckabee had trailed in third place in Michigan.
All three candidates prepare for the South Carolina Republican primaries in just four days. Currently, candidate Fred Thompson is already campaigning in the state of South Carolina.
“It’s a victory of optimism over Washington-style pessimism,” Romney said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press.
“Starting tomorrow, we’re going to win South Carolina, and we’re going to go on and win the nomination” Senator McCain had declared.
Huckabee declared: “We’re going to win South Carolina. We put a flag in the ground here Saturday.” In taking a jab at Romney: “We need to prove that electing a president is not just about how much money a candidate has.”
