The high cost of medical treatment in the Philippines is considered one of the prevailing problems that wholly affect the ordinary people of which 70% of them lived below the poverty level. Often, people that suffer from different illnesses do not go to the hospitals, be it public or private. Evidently, going to hospital is a financial burden to poor patients, knowing that there are circumstances wherein they were just shooed away because money they don’t have. Instead and most of the time, people rely on the power of local faith healers or the shamans.
This kind of scenario is already part of history the world over. People that are destitute and bereft of wealth have no one to turn to but endure their illness until they were conquered by it. Too many cases of people in dire need of medical attention were featured or presented in media, asking for mercy to give them more time to live in this complex world of ours. But “holy cow” only a few takes the call for help. The people in government look much different with their smart get-up. But they’re not up in protecting the health care system. Millions of citizens are suffering from health problems. Hospitals are over crowding with no basic or adequate medicines that would sustain life of all patients. Others prefer to stay in their homes even if they are seriously ill.
Medicines in the Philippines are thrice or even ten times the price of that in Pakistan, India and other Asean countries. The majority of the people are at a loss. Obviously, the health care system of the Philippines is only for the rich. The poor, as usual are twice the victim of all this inequalities. First, the government is not supportive or open to the needs of indigent patients. Yes, they have their health care programs for all the people but it wasn’t enough. Free medicines issued by the national government always go to the safe hands of corrupt Doctors managing health centers all over the country. Second, big pharmaceutical companies are having a killing out of their steep medicine prices. And they have no plan to change the course, because their gluttonous way is the only way to achieving their goal of “obese profitability.”
