Recently, the lives of three Kenyan police officers were lost at the hands of a mob. This was due to claims by the opposition that they were planning to rig the elections in the favor of Kenya’s current president, Mwai Kibaki.
Currently, Mr. Kibaki is fighting to remain in office for a second term. He faces a tough challenge from both Raila Odinga and Kalonso Musyoka whom are two of his former cabinet colleagues.
Over fourteen million citizens are eligible to vote. It is expected that this will be an election with all three sides fighting tooth and nail for the Kenyan presidency. Currently, Mr. Kibaki represents the Party of National Unity.
Raila Odinga heads up the Orange Democratic Movement. His team has accused the Party of National Unity of using dirty tricks.
The final hours before the opening of the voting polls have been marked by mudslinging and allegations of rigging the polls. Currently, there are eight candidates running for president.
Polls open at 0300 GMT.
