Russia has been deploying troops in the Georgian region of Abkhazia, which has prompted many Georgian diplomats to speculate that Russia is preparing a military action against the country. The Georgian minister in charge of the Abkhazia region has even said that he would yield the area to the Russian army if they threatened military intervention.
The Russians have been running propaganda in their country on the international intentions of Georgia in order to stir public support for an intervention there. With the Russian machine en route, Georgian officials have claimed that "We literally have to avert war", a strong implication of Russia’s intentions.
Georgia is an important transit country for worldwide energy transportation and there recent interest in joining NATO has angered the Russian Federation.
