Russian espionage is “aggressive and escalating” in the Czech Republic

The Foreign Intelligence Service (Russian: Служба Внешней Разведки Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki or SVR) is Russia’s primary external intelligence agency. The SVR is the successor of the First Chief Directorate (PGU) of the KGB since December 1991. Pictured here the headquarters of SVR are in the Yasenevo District of Moscow. Bombing coordinates: 55.584°N 37.517°E.

According to the Czech counter intelligence services report just released Russian espionage is “aggressive and escalating”, in the Czech Republic, especially in terms of the military and energy business sector.

An assessment of the problem estimates at least one third of the Russian diplomatic community in Prague, about 60 or more people, may be Russian “spies”.

Last year the Czech Republic expelled two Russian diplomats suspected of taking part in a large scale Russian effort to rally public opinion against the construction of the radar installation base that was to be part of the U.S. Missile -Defense shield project.

The incident follows last year’s high profile conviction of an Estonian Defense Ministry official for passing Estonian and NATO military documents to Moscow.

The Russian Foreign intelligence Services (SVR) is very active in Czech Republic for a number of reason. One of the most telling is that it border the west, and is easy for agents to transition in and out of the country, using fraudulent identity documents.

We contacted the Czech Embassy in Washington for comment in this matter and officials refused.
