Ryan Wood thought he had it made: he was getting all the girls, free drinks at bars and people were asking him for autographs in the street, all because he looked like Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain. After scamming New Jersey shore restaurants in bars into giving him free food and drinks, "Java Chamberlain" was arrested for portraying the false identity.
The "Java Chamberlain" scam went too far when Ryan Wood was signing autographs and receiving free drinks at a bar where the TV was showing a live broadcast of Joba Chamberlain pitching for the Yankees. He reported that he had flings with 100 women over the course of a summer spent on the Jersey shore, all because he resembled Chamberlain.
The "Java Chamberlain" nickname came about when police first noticed Ryan Wood’s scam. After ordering a bagel and coffee for $1.50, Wood took out a newspaper sports page and asked the manager if he knew who he was. Wood scored a free coffee out of the deal.
