EPC News: 20 March,2014:New Delhi: As part of Rs17,265 crore modernization plan, Steel Authority of India (SAIL) today commissioned a new sinter unit at its flagship Bhilai plant. The Rs730 crore new facility has capacity to produce 3.708 mt sinter per annum.
“The expansion of SAIL-BSP is now in an accelerated mode with the operationalization of the new eco-friendly sinter machine which will meet the requirement for new blast furnace as well as the existing furnace,” the company statement said.
The modernization would enhance the plant’s capacity to 7.5 mtpa of hot metal from the present level of 5 mtpa. This is part of the total outlay of Rs72,000 crore for expansion of SAIL’s hot metal capacity from 14.23 MTPA to 23.46 MTPA.
Further a new blast furnace, sinter machine, a coke oven battery, steel melting shop, universal rail mill and a bar and rod mill are the new facilities coming up a Bhilai plant. SAIL is optimistic that these units will not only enhance production capacity but also enrich product quality. Besides, the new units will reduce cost of production and make the plant more eco-friendly.
The new Coke Oven Battery and a blast furnace would be commissioned next, the statement said, adding that the new 1.2 mtpa Universal Rail Mill has also made rapid progress.
Besides, construction work is in progress at the new 0.9 MTPA Bar & Rod Mill, Steel Melting Shops and Oxygen plant.
According to C S Verma, Chairman of SAIL the greatest challenge before the Bhilai collective today is to complete the balance modernization work expeditiously and commission and stabilize the new facilities at the earliest.
