It was anticipated that Proposition 8 in California would not pass. However on Election Day 2008, Proposition 8 did end up passing. This was the most expensive and tense campaign that had taken place in the state of California. Under Proposition 8, there would be a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
Proponents and opponents of Proposition 8 would donate millions of dollars. This made Proposition 8 the costliest campaign in California.
However, the battle for same-sex marriage rights could shift over to the east coast. So far, New York is contemplating on legalizing same-sex marriage. However, there is still the slim possibility.
However, the New York State Senate has other things to tackle first such as the fiscal crisis and creation of jobs.
The debate of same-sex marriage could also shift towards Connecticut. It was only last month that Connecticut had legalized same-sex marriages. The ruling came after eight same-sex couples sued with the argument that civil unions and marriages were not the same thing.
In Connecticut, same-sex couples had started to get married. This is a victory for gay-rights activists. Many across the country are still protesting the passing of Proposition 8 in California.
On the morning of Wednesday, November 12, the final order that legalizes same-sex marriage was passed. This was met with protest with opponents of same-sex marriage.
The battle could very well shift from California to New York and Connecticut. Connecticut can join Massachusetts as states that legalize same-sex marriage.
