While the police are there to protect the lives of the people of a country and be available to them when they are in danger, it is sometimes the police that have to face the music because some people working for the department are not very loyal to their work. Such irresponsible behavior from some San Francisco police officers has led DOJ to take strict actions on the matter.
The US Department of Justice has commenced a review of the recently infamous police department of San Francisco. Mario Woods, a male from the African American descent, was shot by an officer from the San Francisco Police Department and this whole incident was recorded on a video. The incident had taken place in December.
When the video became public, it caused people to come out of their homes demanding for justice. Hundreds of people made a crowd and as justice they wanted Greh Suhr to quit his position as Chief of Police.
However, this was not the only reason for Department of Justice to start the investigation on police department of San Francisco. Another reason for this action is the text messages that were discovered from the records of the officers. The text messages sent to and received by many of the officers working for San Francisco police contained stuff that was hateful towards the homosexual community.
Discipline of the officers has been said to be not possible according to the County of San Francisco Superior Court of California. The reason for this is statute that limits the personnel investigation.
Unnecessary and discriminatory attitude from the police has been the center of attention in the US for quite some time now. There have been several cases where police officers have been found injuring and even killing people for little things.
Similar cases have risen in Chicago a little time back. The case in Chicago involved the police officer named Jason Van Dyke who was accused and charged of murdering a 17 year old boy. The footage of the killing that Jason Van Dyke conducted has not yet been released and the incident has already more than a year old now.
A mistrial was declared in the case of a police chief who was charged of murdering a black man who was not harmed. This declaration was made in South Carolina Court by Judge Edgar Dickson. A verdict was passed of not indicting in the case by a grand jury that was not welcomed by the people of the region. The result was a loud uproar and several instances of violence.
This particular case had actually received international attention due to the involvement of Amnesty International and American Civil Liberties Union. Police officers from Ferguson had received severe criticism for their conducts by Amnesty International in their reports. Furthermore, ACLU also came up with reports that clearly stated that police in the country was using their power more to threaten the civilians than to save and protect them.
