India’s Sania Mirza
The first Indian woman to win a WTA event and break into the top 50 (2005) is back and hoping to stay healthy.
Sania Mirza underwent wrist surgery in April and missed the French Open. Prior to that she made the quarterfinals at Hobart and the third round of the Australian Open.
Again in August the chronic wrist problem forced Mirza to retire in the first round of the Beijing Olympics and miss the U.S. Open. As a result of her injury, her ranking in 2008 fell from 32 to 99. She had a career-high singles ranking of 27, in August 2007. Her ranking is now 101.
In 2009 Mirsa hopes to regain her ranking and stay healthy, she will begin with the Hong Kong invitational in a run up to the Australian Open on January 19, 2009.
It will be good to see her in action again!
