India’s tennis prodigy Sania Mirza added another feather in India’s fine run in sports at the International arena this week by winning the doubles title of $220000 MPS Group Championship at Florida, USA. Sania teamed up Chinese Taipei’s Chia-Jung Chuang to beat the top seeded Czech-American duo of Kveta Peschke and Lisa Raymond 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 in a fiercely fought final, which lasted for nearly 2 hours.
This victory for Sania comes after a gap of nearly 1 year when she had last won a double’s title along with Italian Mara Santangelo in August 2007. Following this win, the Indian star has now jumped to the 59th spot in her doubles ATP rankings; while her single’s ATP rank remains unchanged at 100th.
The present upswing of Indian fortunes at various arenas of world sport events is indeed a matter of great pride for all Indians. Firstly it was the Indian Cricket Team winning a test series in New Zealand after nearly 3 decades; soon after came the good news of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup title, which the Indian boys Hockey Team won after a gap of 13 years; and now it is Sania’s turn to keep the Indian flag flying high at the world arena. The whole of India must feel proud at the achievements of these youngsters.
