UNICEF has sponsored installation of sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerator in Tamil Nadu’s govt schools. This has led to increase in attendence and performance of girl students reported by the teachers. The students used to miss atleast 5 days of school. It is an innovative scheme which states of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are also planning to introduce in their schools. It has also provided an alternative source of income to thousands of women in Tamil Nadu SHGs that manufacture the sanitary napkins. The schools are good markets to sell their products. It is a scheme benefitting both the girls and women – a big step in the direction of women empowerment.
