Srinagar,October 01 (Scoop News)-At least eight Sarpanches and senior leaders of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference were arrested by police in Srinagar on Tuesday when a large number of Sarpanches tried to march towards assembly near exhibition ground . The detained srapanches included Provincial president AJKPC Imtiaz Afzal Beig and provincial secretary Bashir Ahmed Malik were lodged in Shergarhi and Shaheed Gunj police stations till the last reports came in .
According to reports, large number of elected Panches and Sarpanches of Kashmir valley had gathered in Exhibition ground near civil secretariat Srinagar on Tuesday with an aim to march towards assembly complex where the autumn assembly session was going on . The Sarpanches were demanding the implementation of 37rd amendment of Indian constitution in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and protesting against the failure of Panchayati Raj in the state . However, sensing the trouble in advance, the state government had deployed large number of cops in and around the exhibition ground to foil the assembly Gehrawo by Sarpanches . About 250 to 300 Sarpanches had gathered near the Exhibition ground in a dispersed form to give police a slip . As soon as about 100 Sarpanches led by AJKPC Provincial president Kashmir Imtiaz Afzal Beig and Provincial Secrratay Bashir Ahmed Malik tried to come out from the exhibition ground and march towards assembly , large number of cops deployed already in the area came in to action and over powered the leaders of the Sarpanches and detained them . They were lodged in Shaheed Ganj and Sher Garhi police stations . Those arrested have been identified as Imtiaz Afzal Beig , Bashir Ahmed Malik , Aftaab Ahmed Beig,Nazir Ahmed Laroo, Bashir Ahmed Rather, Ghulam Hassan Rather, Ghulam Mohidin and Abdul Ahad Chatt .
While being arrested the Sarpanches were raising the slogans in favor of Panchayati Raj and against the state government. The agitating Sarpanches alleged that Panchayati Raj has completely failed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and the state government has rendered the institution completely defunct . Demanding the implementation of 73rd amendment in the state of Jammu and Kashmir , the arrested leaders of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference said they will continue their struggle and the present government will be taught lesson . Senior leader of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference and vice president for Kashmir valley, Aftaab Ahmed Beig has warned the state government of dire consequences if the central Panchayati Raj system is not extended to the state of Jammmu and Kashmir . He alleged that all the claims made by the state government are totally false and there was nothing on ground like Panchayati Raj .
