Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has highlighted the role of NGOs and welfare organizations in the development and well-being of women, children, orphans, destitute and poor sections of the society. He said large number of these sections in the State require substantial succor for rehabilitation and development.
Mr. Abdullah was speaking to the management of ‘Save the Children,’ an NGO who called on him here today.
The Chief Minister said that the schemes launched by the Centre and State Governments for the welfare of under-privileged women and children and protection and education of orphans under the social welfare sector in the State would get further boost by the involvement of NGOs.He said this involvement could be in the integrated programmes of health, education and development of women and children especially belonging to the poorer and backward sections of the society.
The NGO brought to the notice of the Chief Minister the functioning and achievements of ‘Save the Children’ in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the Ladakh region.
The NGO said that Jammu and Kashmir Government has been consistently supporting the organization in the State to help it accomplish the stupendous service focusing on children.
For the last two years, the focus of ‘Save the Children’ organization has been on improving the lives of children orphaned or severely affected in the militancy. It was further said that a programme “improving protection, mechanisms for orphans and under-privileged families” has also been launched in the State. Under this programme, 192 village level committees with 128 children groups have been organized to monitor and respond various child protection issues.
The NGO management said that with the collaboration of State Government and assistance by European Union another programme for the development and protection of children, especially orphan and under-privileged, is being launched shortly to cover 400 villages of Jammu and Kashmir State.
