Rajouri/Jammu,May 23 (Scoop News) –Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University’s Centre for Biodiversity Studies (CBS) celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity which has been declared by the United Nations and celebrated all over the world for the promotion of biodiversity issues.
Although the function was chaired by Prof. G. H. Dar, Fellow Professor of Mahatma Gandhi Chair on Ecology & Environment in the CBS, Vice Chancellor Prof Irshad A Hamal in his message has said that every human being to save water and recognize that water conservation really is our personal responsibility and not just leaves it up to other people. He impressed upon to save water today so that it will be available to us in the future. “We need to think of future generations, people who will not have a sufficient supply of water unless we become more concerned with how we use our water today”, he said.
Vice Chancellor has also congratulated the department for organizing such programme regarding Biodiversity in the Centre.
To begin with Dr. Susheel Verma, Associate Professor, gave a brief background of the International Biodiversity Day and introduced the audience to the importance of biodiversity and the need to conserve it.
The day long activities included theme-based poster and collage making competitions, brief speeches by the scholars and awareness programme on the conservation of biodiversity and water resources.
In his concluding lecture, Prof. G. H. Dar emphasized on generating information on different life forms including microbes, animals and plants. He said that this is necessitated because without having information on the extent of biodiversity, no conservation effort can be successful. He said that various other aspects of biodiversity: the species richness of our country and of the State of Jammu & Kashmir, the usefulness of our rich and varied bioresources, the overexploitation of these resources beyond their natural regeneration, and the dire need to make our common masses aware about this dwindling biological wealth so as to involve them in all biodiversity conservation programmes and actions.
After this, there was a general discussion/debate on biodiversity in which all the participants put forth their view points on the importance of biodiversity and the dire need to conserve it.
Dr. Shreekar Pant and Ms. Mamta Bhat, Assistant Professors, stressed upon conservation of water bodies by initiating efforts at local level.
The function ended with the concluding remarks of Dr. A. A. Shah, Associate Professor, who stressed that inventorization and documentation of biodiversity is badly needed for its proper management and conservation.
