-With the aim to root out menace of smoking from society and to create awareness among student community about the ill effects of smoking a seminar in this respect was organized today in Government Higher Secondary School (Boys) Doda in J&K.
Students drawn from different classes of the School participated in the seminar and presented their valuable comments about the ill effects of smoking and measures to be taken to eradicate smoking from the society. They asked the Government to establish consultation and assistance centres to help those who want to quit smoking.
Speaking on the occasion. G.N Batt I/c Principal Government Higher Secondary School (Boys) Doda cautioned the student community about their vulnerability to smoking due to their innocence and lack of knowledge about the dangers of smoking. He said that about 10,0000 people in India die annually due to smoking. He said that measures taken by the Government by enforcing provisions of Cigarettes and Tobacco products is highly appreciate able but much more needs to be done in this regard. He said that ban on smoking at Public places, Schools, Bus stands, Buses, Railway stations, Offices and other places would curb the growing weed of smoking and also decrease the percentage of smokers as well. He also said that smoking is a sweet poison and leads to multiple lethal disorders like Ulcer, Cancer, Tuberculosis, High Blood Pressure, Nervous System disorders besides badly affecting the health of other people also. He further said that student community will have to play an important role in creating awareness among their family members and people in their vicinity about the ill effects of smoking with this we can think of a smoking free environment.Other staff members also spoke on the occasion and lauded the students for their participation and comments on the occasion.
A rally was taken out by the Department of Students Welfare, Department of Environmental Sciences and officers of the NSS Coordinator Jammu University in association with the Department of Environment and Remote Sensing and the State Pollution Control Board Jammu at Jammu University Campus.
Vice Chancellor, Jammu University Prof. Varun Sahni who flagged off the rally said that Pollution prevalent in our environment is relentlessly on the rise, despite some corrective measures. It is at present, on of the major problem s being faced, not only be one nation but by the entire world as the horrendous effects of the environmental pollution, is harming the whole mankind.
He further said that it is the duty of all, whether as an individual or in collective capacity to save the environment.
The main aim of organizing the rally was to aware the people about the hazards of pollution especially about the polythene bags in wake of the recent order of the Government imposing ban on the manufacturing and use of polythene bags.
