A second bombing by the Basque terrorist group, ETA, occurred today this time in Palmanova on the spanish resort island of Palma de Mallorca. At least two people are reported dead when a bomb placed under an all-terrain police vehicle exploded at 1:50 in the afternoon spanish time.
The vehicle had been parked in front of a building used by the local police and the Guardia Civil for several hours prior to the explosion. The building is located in a residential and tourist beach area.
The explosion was thought to have been activated from a distance shortly before change of shift and was strong enough to damage several nearby buildings. The confirmed dead are two members of the Guardia Civil who had just entered the vehicle at the time of the explosion.
All access to the island of Palma de Mallorca is currently closed in attempts to block the perpetrators of the bombing from leaving the island.
Authorities have successfully deactivated a second car containing a bomb near today’s attack. This is the second ETA attack in 24 hours in Spain. Yesterday’s attack, which occurred in the northern city of Burgos, was outside a Guardia Civil barracks and injured 54 people.
The attacks are thought to be a show of force in spite of the spanish government’s theory of the groups weakening state due to recent arrests of high ranking ETA leaders in Spain and France. Friday marks the group’s 50th Anniversary since it’s founding.
