Jammu, February 11 (Scoop News) – Govt College for women Parade today organised a one day conference on the theme ‘Green Earth’ under the auspices of the Jammu Chapter of ‘The Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA)’, the premier science organization in India, estd. in 1914, that represents the entire science community of the country with representatives from different countries across the globe.
Mr. Upendra Pachnananda, Chief Conservator of Forests Jammu & Kashmir was the Chief Guest who stressed upon devising the various ways and means to preserve and enrich our earth as this is the dire need of the present transitory period.
Prof. M.K. Jyoti, Chairman, Jammu Chapter of the Indian Science Congress Association was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Jyoti also focused on the hazardous and toxic pollutants and suggested some remedial steps to be taken by the mankind in general.
Prof. G.M. Bhatt, Prof. of Geology and Controller of Examinations, University of Jammu presented the key note address. In his address he said that the seminar will provide a platform to discuss strategies for the prevention and control of different types of pollution and to suggest remedial measures thereof. It will also help to collect and disseminate information relating to pollution, global warming, ozone depletion, climate change, loss of biodiversity, contamination of foodstuff etc. The Plenary Lecture was presented by Prof. B.L. Kaul, former Prof. of Zoology, who also discussed the problems related to the depletion of glaciers etc.
Dr. V. P. Sharma, former Chairperson, WWF-India, Jammu, and Dr. C.M. Seth, Hony. Director, WWF-India, Jammu were the Chairperson and Co- Chairperson in the sessions.
At the Outset Dr. Kiran Bakshi, Principal, GCW Parade Ground Jammu, formally welcomed the Chief Guest, dignitaries, delegates and other participants. Speaking on the occasion she said that Human activities such as industrialization, urbanization, deforestation and use of different technologies emitting hazardous and toxic pollutants, indiscriminate use of insecticides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers to meet the ever increasing demand of expanding population have led to the disturbance of ecological balance to a great extent. The result is the pollution of air, water and soil. Attempts were made during the conference to coordinate and invite the environmentalists, agriculturists, toxicologists, biologists, policy makers, technocrats and scientists from all over the state on a platform to think deeply on the present scenario and suggest remedial measures thereof.
In the valedictory function MLA Jammu East, Mr. Ashok Khajuria was the Chief Guest.
Speaking on the occasion Ashok Khajuria said that public participation is required to save the environment from various types of pollutions and stressed upon the conservation of energy, water etc.
