Serbia’s Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica not only recalled its ambassador from the United States, it has also given warning in form of a threat. Serbia has threatened to remove ambassadors from all countries that have recognized Serbia’s independence. So far, a good number of countries within the European Union (EU) have supported Kosovo’s independence. But, the EU itself is split over the move.
On Sunday by Russia’s request, the United Nations Security Council had held an emergency session on Kosovo’s succession from Serbia. The EU had met in Brussels, Belgium to also discuss the matter. So far, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy have moved forward to recognize Kosovo’s independence.
The EU had offered Serbia membership last year if it would let Kosovo be independence. But, Serbia refused and would not let Kosovo go.
Boris Tadic, the president of Serbia has appealed to the UN Security Council to null Kosovo’s declaration. Technically, Kosovo is still administered by both the United Nations and NATO.
After the EU meeting in Brussels, the leading member states accepted Kosovo’s independence. However, they said that it should not send a signal to other states. That was the concern with Russia as it could send a message to separatists in Georgia’s breakaway states.
Spain and Greece had also voiced their concerns about separatist movements as well.
So far, Belgrade has ordered all ambassadors home from countries that recognize Kosovo as an independent state. So far, envoys from France and Turkey have been called back according to The Associated Press.
“If you cast a blind eye to this illegal act, who guarantees to you to parts of your country will not declare independence in the same illegal way?” Tadic asked.
On Monday, February 18, the United States had accepted Kosovo’s independence.
Most of Kosovo’s population is ethnic Albanian. Kosovo’s PM Thaci has said that everybody in Kosovo including the Serbs living there will receive equal treatment.
