Jammu, June 4, (Scoop News)-Authorities imposed indefinite curfew in Jammu after a civilian was killed in a police firing following scores of Sikh protesters clashed with police and paramilitary personnel, officials said on Thursday.
Scores of Sikhs assembled and started demonstrating against the police whom they accused of offending their community on Wednesday by pulling apart banners carrying photographs of late Jernal Singh Bhinderanwala.
According to the civil authorities, the protests took place between Rani Bagh and Kulian on the outskirts of Jammu city, (Jammu- RS Pora road), and soon after the death of a civilian, curfew was imposed on several vulnerable and communally sensitive parts of the winter capital of north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Police, the officials said, fired several warning shots in air and used tear smoke canisters to disperse the unruly crowd of protesters who lobbed rocks and missiles on them.
Authorities claimed the situation to be under control but tense.
Dozens of Sikh youths on Wednesday had argument with police officials in the area on “banner issue” in which one police official was reportedly stabbed and another severely beaten up.
