Shanghai to home world’s largest nuke power equipment base

Shanghai Electric Group (SEG), one of the top power generation equipment manufacturers in China, invested 1 billion yuan in the second phase of the base, which started the construction last week.

Located in Linggang, a newly developed export zone at the southeast tip of Shanghai, the base, which is planned to be completed by 2012, will be the largest sophisticated nuclear power generation equipment manufacturing base in the world, reports local mediaJie Fang Daily.

SEG has been pushing the whole project since 2006. The first phase, which costed around 4.8 billion yuan, has

China’s most completed production chains to manufacture the main equipment for pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power stations.

The recent moves witnessed China’s ambition to upgrade its nuclear technology. Shenzhen-based China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Co.,Ltd.(CGNP), announced early this year that it had developed the secondary pumps, such as residual heat removal pump and electric auxiliary feedwater pump, for million-kilowatt nuclear reactors, giving Chinese buyers a domestic option for the first time.

In September last year, China developed its first reactor components – the core facility of a reactor, made by Shanghai No.1 Machine Tool Works, a unit of SEG, and designed by Chengdu-based Nuclear Power Institute of China. The reactor components are for the expansion project of Qinshan NPP, reported Xinhua.
