Significance of the API- active pharmaceutical ingredients

15 March 2013, Mumbai : API refers to those components in the drugs that are chemically active. Such drugs are administrated by the medical expert on account of the application, the side-effects after the consumption & the consequences after the proper intake of the doses. There are various kinds of drugs that are composed of such active aspects.

Let us have a detailed study of API. Drugs are basically composed of two types of components. The fundamental one is the active pharmaceutical ingredient which is also termed as the key element that is present in the medicine. The second component is expressed as excipient. These refer to the materials that are present in the medicine or the drug. If the medicine is in liquid form, then it is mandatory that the excipient must be in the form of a fluid. Thus, these excipient are overall termed as inactive substances that are present in the inner part of the medicines, while API are mainly those substances that produce the required impact on the body, when consumed.

API is only one component which has to be blended well with the other aspects & the duo combination of the factors helps to generate the desired effect of the medicine which is required for treatment. While manufacturing the drugs, various techniques are applied to calculate the strength of such ingredients to determine its relative capacity. The capacities in the various components differ in terms of the severity. Different manufacturers make use of different ranges of such ingredients depending upon the requirement of the medicine.

Ensuring superior quality of medicinal products is the supreme need of the day. Sources explain that the Food & Drug Association has set up unique standards for the proper maintenance & storage, packing, release of these active components. It is the responsibility of the suppliers to either accept or reject all such materials, packaging components as per the consideration.
