Maintaining that the agriculture continues to be the backbone of the economy and a main source of livelihood for a big chunk of population in the State, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-K, Prof. Anwar Alam said that there was a dire need for continued strengthening of agriculture among the youth. He waned of serious consequences of agriculture land being used for non-agricultural purposes adding that this practice would affect the agriculture productive and ecology. He pleaded for launching a massive awareness campaign among the farming community in this regard saying that the public representatives have to play a pivotal role in it.
Addressing a press conference at SKUAST-K, Shalimar in Srinagar on Friday, the Vice-Chancellor said the university has developed 17 hybrid crop varieties which have high yielding potential. He made a presentation of these varieties to the media persons. He urged upon the people to make use of these varieties to enhance the production and productivity of agricultural products.
Replying to a query, Prof. Alam said that since no subsidy has been provided to the SKUAST for introducing the newly developed crop varieties, the farmers will have to bear with us.
Principal Breeders of the newly evolved crop varieties including Dr. A.G. Rather, Dr. F. A Nehvi, Dr. F. A. Sheikh, Dr. Gul Zaffar, Dr. Nazir Ahmad and Dr. K. D. Farooqui were present at the press conference.
