Social media leading youths in conserving of Kakamega forest

Youths in Kakamega County are using the social media to promote peace and conserve the environment.
Through their Facebook fan page dubbed ‘friends of Kakamega Forest’, the youths hold discussions on topical issues, receive comments and even engage environmental experts to discuss ways of how the environment can be used to promote peace at the same time conserving Kakamega Forest.
“Our fan page has more than 600 active members and the number keeps on increasing every day, soon we will be on twitter and Skype,” said Mr. Arthur Mukala, the Organizing Secretary, Young Environmental Network in Africa (YENA).
Mr. Mukala was speaking at the official launch of planting 1 million trees in conserving Kakamega Forest project at Masinde Muliro University. They planted 400 seedlings at the forest, Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) and are also targeting other institutions to reach their target come 2017.
He urged the youths from the region to embrace the project so that they do not lose the forest that is known for having many indigenous trees from Africa.
The youths are sponsored by Kenya Young Greens (KYG), Kenya Youth Climate Network among other sponsors.
