Socialist must address inequalities

Social Democratic Political parties across the globe have been called to develop greater capacities to address the burden of inequalities imposed on developing nations by the unfair world economic order.

“Most vulnerable segments of the population in the developing nations continued to bear the heavy burdens imposed by world economic system garrisoned by the iron laws of a brutal Capitalist order which have little sympathy for the poor”.

The flag bearer of Ghana’s biggest opposition party, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, said this on a two -day Socialist International African Committee meeting in Accra, as a part of activities marking the 15th anniversary of the establishment of NDC, and the Golden Jubilee of Ghana.

He said under the globalization developing nations had been forced to participate in a marketplace where there was no equity such that it became more hostile to those who approached it with primary products and basic commodities.

He said the condition of African countries had deteriorated in the face of cries of diseases and inadequacy of resources.

Prof. Mills said the development of African continent must always be undertaken with a human face, directed towards satisfying people’s needs in the vital areas of education, health, basic amenities such as water, energy, etc.

He was of the hope that the Accra Conference will create deeper understanding and commitment to those values which remained essential for their search for a better world without racism, materialism, and world that guaranteed equality for all.

On his part, the Secretary General of Socialist International, Mr. Luis Ayala, said democratic gains chalked in some African countries including Ghana, Senegal, in the last decade had been eroded.

He stressed the need for democratic institutions to be strengthened to ensure free and fair elections in the region.

The chairman of the Africa Committee, Mr. Ousman Tanor Dieng, said free and fair elections are essential ingredients for good governance in Africa.

Many electoral commissions are incompetent, not neutral, and incapable of organizing free and fair elections. Hence the need to have impartial and independent Electoral Commissions to enable the citizens chooses freely so that government can rule with legitimacy” he said.
